Electrolysis

Electrolysis

  • This means splitting up with electricity
  • If you pass a current through a ionic substance (electrolyte (has to molten or in a solution))
  • It will split into its elements
  • It requires an extra liquid to conduct the electricity (this is called an electrolyte)
  • Electrolytes contain free ions that are usually the molten or dissolved version of the substance
  • The free ions conduct the electricity and there is a flow of electrons from a positive electrode to the negative electrode
  • Positive ions are attracted to the negative electrode and gain electrons and become the pure atom and the negative ions are attracted to the positive electrode and lose electrons
  • Electrolysis ions involve oxidation and reduction
  • Reduction involves a loss of oxygen – but it is also about gaining electrons
  • Oxidation is about gaining oxygen – But is also about losing electrons
  • OIL RIG – oxidation is losing and reduction is gaining
